How We Work

A Personalised Approach from Day One

Every student referred to Tutor Doctor has different needs, different circumstances, and a different history with education. Before any tuition begins, we take the time to understand the student fully — their educational priorities, any SEND or SEMH considerations, attendance concerns, and what the school or council needs from the programme. Where contact details are available, we also reach out to the student’s family before the first session, so the relationship starts on the right footing for everyone.

From first contact to a matched tutor, here is how it works.

Understand

We take time to understand the student — their educational needs, circumstances, and what the school or council needs from the programme.

Plan

We develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP), aligned to EHCP targets where applicable, and agree reporting format and cadence with you from the outset.

Match

We match the student to the right tutor based on subject knowledge, experience, and the right fit for their specific needs.

Support

We stay involved throughout, adapting the programme as needs change and keeping your team informed at every stage.

Support that Works Around the Student

Tuition can be delivered in school, at home, online, or through a blended model — wherever the student is most likely to engage. We agree the right format with the school or council at the outset, and adapt as circumstances change.

Delivery that moves with the student

For students on a reintegration pathway, our delivery model is built to move with them. A student can begin with home-based tuition and progress gradually towards sessions on school premises — building confidence and familiarity with the school environment at a pace that is realistic for them. We plan that journey with the school from the start, with close coordination with the SENCO or inclusion lead throughout. For looked-after children, progress on that pathway feeds directly into Personal Education Plan (PEP) reviews.

2

Support when school isn’t possible

For students with medical needs or those unable to attend school for other reasons, in-home and online tuition via LessonSpace provides continuity of education without disruption — keeping learning going while circumstances are managed, and ready to reintegrate back into school when appropriate.

They’ve met our needs, been incredibly supportive and understanding of our students, and built really solid relationships — engagement in education has improved in every case we’ve referred to them.

Our Standards

Safeguarding, attendance, and measuring progress are the foundation of any serious provision. Here is what each looks like when you work with us.

Safeguarding

Our safeguarding policy was developed in collaboration with the NSPCC and is aligned with Keeping Children Safe in Education (2025). Every office has a Designated Safeguarding Lead, and every tutor goes through full Safer Recruitment. When a concern is raised — however small — someone with the authority to act responds immediately.

Attendance

Every session is tracked in real time, with daily attendance data accessible via our Schools Portal. We agree reporting cadence and format with the school or council at the outset, and build around what works for them.

Measuring Progress

Progress is defined with the school before the first session. Tutors submit a report after every session, and for students with EHCPs, termly reviews are aligned to their targets. We adapt what we report to what is meaningful for each student.

Our Impact

Tutor Doctor has partnered with 600+ schools and local authorities across the UK on a wide range of educational challenges — SEND provision, reintegration support, GCSE intervention, attendance support, and alternative provision pathways.
