Supporting Pupils Through Alternative Provision
The pupils referred to us for alternative provision are often those with the most complex needs. Many have SEND, most have experienced disruption, and all of them need provision that takes their individual circumstances seriously from day one.
We work with local authority commissioners, AP managers, Virtual School Heads, and school SLTs to put the right support in place quickly. Every placement is built around the individual pupil — their needs, their barriers, and what a realistic pathway back into education looks like for them.
We stay involved throughout the placement — adapting the programme as circumstances change and keeping commissioners and schools informed at every stage.
What Commissioners Can Expect
Throughout every placement, you have a direct person of contact — someone who knows the student’s circumstances, understands your reporting requirements, and stays directly involved. In practice, that means:
A tutor report submitted after every session
Real-time attendance tracking with daily reporting
Direct escalation when a concern is raised — however small
Reporting format adapted for Ofsted readiness, EHCP annual reviews, and PEP meetings as required
Proactive communication when a student’s circumstances change — not a report at the end of the term
Our Designated Safeguarding Lead is involved in every AP placement from the outset
How We Deliver Alternative Provision
Every AP placement is built around a thorough understanding of the student before the first session begins — their circumstances, what has and hasn’t worked before, and what a realistic reintegration pathway looks like.
Understand the student
Take time to understand their circumstances, what has and hasn’t worked before, and what a realistic reintegration pathway looks like.
Meet with the school or council
Agree objectives and establish a reintegration plan from the outset.
Make proactive family contact
When appropriate, we contact the student’s family before the first session to introduce ourselves, learn about them as a person, and build trust on all sides.
Develop an Individual Learning Plan
An ILP aligned to the student’s needs and EHCP targets where applicable.
Assign a named local contact
A single point of contact throughout the placement.
Sessions are delivered one-to-one, wherever the student is most likely to engage — at home, in school, online via LessonSpace, or through a hybrid model combining home and school, particularly suited to staged reintegration. Our delivery is fully aligned with the DfE’s AP quality framework across all four pillars: safeguarding and welfare, health and safety, admissions support and guidance, and quality of education.
Our Process
A clear, consistent path from first conversation to ongoing support — so you always know what happens next and who’s accountable at every stage.
Understand
We take time to understand the student — their educational needs, circumstances, and what the school or council needs from the programme.
Plan
We develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP), aligned to EHCP targets where applicable, and agree reporting format and cadence with you from the outset.
Match
We match the student to the right tutor based on subject knowledge, experience, and the right fit for their specific needs.
Support
We stay involved throughout, adapting the programme as needs change and keeping your team informed at every stage.
Tutor Doctor has engaged some of our more difficult to reach students with an enthusiastic and warm approach that the students have found very positive. They have encouraged and gained the trust of students who have struggled with mainstream education and produced great results not only academically but also with students’ self-esteem and their positive outlook on completing the work and improving their grades. Tutors have been flexible and adaptable in their approach with these students maintaining their professionalism throughout. I would highly recommend Tutor Doctor.
